nThere are three objective lenses mounted
together – the entire assembly is often called the nose piece. Note the ring
of the nose piece (1). This ring when turned, bring the desired objective into
position. When the objective is correctly aligned it ‘clicks’ into
position.
nNever hold the
objective to turn the nose piece. Always use this ring!
nNote the numbers on the objectives (in
ovals in the pictures) – 4x, 10x and 40x. These indicate the magnifying power
of the lenses. The other numbers / letters do not concern us. The objectives
also have distinguishing coloured rings on them.
nNotice that the lowest-magnification
objective (4x, also called the scanner) is the shortest and the 40x (high
power) is the longest. The “low power” objective (10x) is of an intermediate
length. This has an important bearing on the care that is required when using
these lenses with a slide on the stage.
